Importance of Little Dolls
The dolls of the 1960’s and 1970’s are becoming more collectible. The Mattel toy company introduced one of
the most popular lines of dolls of that time in 1966. Liddle kiddle dolls were all the rage. Little girls loved them because of the bright colors, and the fact that most Liddle Kiddles came packaged in a unique plastic containers to be worn as a necklace. Parents loved them because they were affordable, small and easy to display without taking up too much room.
Although these miniature dolls were only 2 - 3 inches tall they had charm and personality that made every little girl want them. The quality of the dolls was extremely high and can be seen especially in the eye-catching detail of the colorful outfits and hairstyles.
One of the exceptional features of the Liddle Kiddle dolls is their exquisite hairstyles. You can find Liddle Kiddle dolls with hair coloring in the average shades of blond and brunette or wild exotic colors such as bright purple, lime green or vivid scarlet red. It is not uncommon to find Liddle Kiddle dolls with tiny ribbons in their hair or flowers of fabric or plastic woven into their hair. The outfits that the Liddle Kiddle dolls wore were very well made considering their small size and that they were mass manufactured. Each miniature outfit is detailed with lace, ribbons or appliqués. Because most of the Liddle Kiddle doll’s clothing was not intended to be removed it is very common to find Liddle Kiddle dolls sporting their original garments.
The very first Liddle Kiddle dolls to be manufactured did not come with a their own plastic containers. These were simply miniature dolls that had a complete line of accessories such as a sailboat, bicycle or rocking horse.
Then came the Lucky Locket Kiddle series. These were very popular little dolls. Each doll came packaged in it’s own plastic bubble locket, these could be worn as a necklace on a chain or clipped to a pocket. Little girls were thrilled that their dolls could be worn as jewelry. The Tea Party Kiddle series of dolls are highly sought after among collectors. These little ladies are the aristocrats of the Liddle Kiddle high society. They have elaborate costumes of satin, brocade or lace. Their names are as elegant and fit into the Liddle Kiddle high society, among them you will find, Lady Crimson, Lady Lace and Lady Silver.
The Story Book Kiddle doll series were very appealing to little girls. Based on fairytales these little dolls came with tiny storybooks and other miniature accessories. With names like Liddle Red Riding Hiddle, Liddle Biddle Peep and Cinderdiddle these miniature dolls became very popular.
The Liddle Kiddle Cologne series is very popular today among collectors, just as they were popular among little girls when they came out on the market. These dolls came in a plastic container shaped like a fancy perfume bottle. These dolls had brightly colored hair and sported a variety of sophisticated hairstyles.
The Kola Kiddle doll series were one of Mattel’s best selling Liddle Kiddle series. These are the easiest of the Liddle Kiddle dolls to find in today’s collector market. These little dolls were packaged in plastic containers that were shaped like miniature pop bottles. These dolls were dressed in colorful faux-brushed suede outfits, each doll wearing a matching hat decorated with decorated with minuscule plastic fruit. These Liddle Kiddle dolls were given names such as Olivia Orange, Laffy Lemon, Greta Grape and Luscious Lime.
Dolls from the Action Kiddle doll series are harder find than the other Liddle Kiddle dolls. These dolls are highly sought after by collectors. They were slightly larger than the other Liddle kiddle dolls. Action Kiddle dolls came attached to a plastic rod with small wheels on the bottom, as the doll was pushed along the wheels turned and made the dolls arms and legs move. Action Kiddle dolls came as characters such as a cheerleader.
There are many other Liddle Kiddle dolls that were manufactured; the ones mentioned here are the most popular.
The collector needs to beware of imitations, there were many small dolls manufactured by other companies in attempt to join the miniature doll craze of the 60’s and 70’s. Most of the imitations made were not made with the detail or high quality materials that the Mattel dolls were.
The Liddle Kiddle doll series are perfect for the doll collector who has limited space to display their collections, or too those who have only a small amount of money to invest. Liddle Kiddle dolls can be found reasonably priced at antique stores, flea markets, garage sales and on line at web sites such as ebay
